MARTA votes to raise fares to $2.50, the second increase in two years. That makes for 43% higher fares since two years ago. Monthly passes would go to $95, from $52.50 just two years ago. In spite of the sluggish economy, MARTA says the fare hikes are necessary to sustain the service and prepare for regional transit integration, and that in the last decade it went nearly nine years without raising fares to keep pace with inflation. This year, Thanksgiving holiday deals don’t begin and end at the shopping mall, or even online.

From now until the end of the month, MARTA customers can buy a 30-Day Breeze pass at a $24 discount.

That’s the equivalent of getting a seven-day pass for free (more money for tacky Christmas sweaters!).

The limited time “Switch & Save” promotion is intended to attract new ridership while rewarding MARTA’s current customers.

Mobility (paratransit) customers can purchase a monthly pass that normally costs $128 for only $96.

The passes are available for purchase at Breeze vending machines at MARTA rail stations, at the Ridestores at the Five Points and Airport stations, or online at www.breeze.com.

The 30-day pass is activated upon first use and remains active with 30 consecutive trips for 30 consecutive days. The pass will expire on Jan. 1, 2017.
