A big screen with a big idea

Rendering of the big screen at Commerce Square’s courtyard in Philadelphia.

This is pretty cool. A transportation software company called TransitScreen and a Philadelphia real estate company have programmed a giant outdoor screen at Philly’s Commerce Square with real-time data on practically every ground transportation option.

The screen shows you “next train” times for local and regional rail service (SEPTA and Amtrak) and how many minutes it will take to walk to each station. It tells you where the nearest bikeshare “docks” are and how many bikes are available. It lists nearby Zipcar and Philly CarShare locations and how many cars are on hand at each, or how long it will take Uber to reach you.

The screen is an initiative of TransitScreen, based in Washington D.C. and San Francisco, and Brandywine Realty Trust, a Radnor, Pa.-based company that owns, manages and leases office buildings. Commerce Square is a twin-skyscraper complex with a one-acre courtyard between the two towers.
