Jay Roberts, a Republican state House member from Ocilla, has been nominated by Gov. Nathan Deal to become the new planning director of the Georgia Department of Transportation.
Assuming the House and Senate Transportation Committees confirm the appointment, he starts the job May 15.
Roberts was the point man on getting the billion-dollar transportation funding bill (HB 170) passed during the last legislative session. Deal signed the bill into law on Monday.
“Rep. Roberts is a subject matter expert and a statewide leader on transportation issues,” Deal said in a press release. “He’s earned the trust of his colleagues on the two transportation committees, and I look forward to their confirmation of his nomination.”
Roberts’ House District 155 included portions of Irwin, Ben Hill, Turner, Tift and Coffee counties. He chaired the House transportation Committee and was also a member of the Appropriations, Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, Rules and Game and Fish and Parks committees.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Valdosta State University. He and his wife, Sarah, have two children and reside in Ocilla.
